PERUGIA: LOGISTIC SERVICES FROM ZONAMERICA TO THE WORLD
At the Tenth Anniversary of Perugia S.A. as Zonamerica logistics operator, we held an interview with the company´s CEO, Mr. Rodolfo Mangino. We talked about the evolution of this company in the business park and the position of Uruguay as logistic pole in the region.

What is Perugia’s main area of activity?

Perugia was created in 1994 and its main objective is to provide services geared to promoting Foreign Trade and international business, by means of meeting the needs of domestic and foreign corporations in the area of international trade. We offer four comprehensive service areas: general cargo storage, customs brokerage, international fleet and insurance and administration and accounting services for foreign corporations.

Who are your strategic partners in the region?

Our main strategic partners are our customers. 85 % of our customer base is abroad, basically in Brazil, Argentina and USA. We also have several business alliances and a promotion network for our services abroad, through our alliances with Law and Accounting Firms, Cargo Agents, Logistics Operators, Customs Brokers, etc. These alliances have allowed us to position our company as a useful tool in the logistics chain. We offer a wide range of services and world-class logistic operations that meet the current demands of globalization in international trade and businesses.
With the help of our strategic partners, we have achieved the position that we have today. So, we would like to thank all our strategic partners who, for the last 10 years have trusted in PERUGIA in the area of international trade.

How would you evaluate the evolution of Perugia and of the country in general in the area of logistics in these last ten years operating in Zonamerica?

We were lucky enough to start the process along with Zonamerica, growing together in a project that has now become a reality. Many things have changed since our beginnings. Ranging from the building structure of the park to the diversity of companies that have made the decision of establishing operative centers here, who believe Uruguay and our Free Zone Law are a valid alternative.
Our company has grown significantly in these last years, based on experience, our services and the acceptance and loyalty towards PERUGIA as prime logistics operator.

What are the advantages of Uruguay over other countries in the region for becoming a logistics center?

Uruguay has a first class Free Zone, which is basically the area where we develop our services, and a very favorable Free Zone Law. Other important factors are: the geographical situation of Uruguay, the port of Montevideo as the entry door of goods on transit to the region, convenient handling and port costs (currently the lowest in the region), qualified and highly efficient manpower, the possibility of modifying goods at free zone warehouses to be later exported (Free Zone Regulatory System), fast customs operations.

What projects, either private or public, do you think would benefit Uruguay?

I think that for Uruguay to be positioned as a Logistics Cluster we need the joint efforts of private and public sectors in order to market Uruguay to the rest of the world as the ideal business opportunity. In my opinion, the refurbishment of the airport is crucial to attract new cargo operators and bring back some that have operated in Uruguay in the past. Such refurbishment would improve services and flight frequencies and would directly benefit customers. I think we are on the correct path to have a good airport, suitable for meeting cargo handling demands.
As for the public sector, existing regulatory systems need further definition and distinction. We need to make distinctions between a free port, a free zone, an inspection warehouse, and clarify the advantages and disadvantages of each one.
We need to take advantage of the current situation where the ports of Argentina and Brazil are overcrowded with containerized cargo, with high operating time and costs for customers. Uruguay has to become a logistics alternative for container handling in the region through the port of Montevideo and the country’s free zone operations.
